Q: When did you first come across Sue Bryce Education and how has it affected your career?

A: I first came across a YouTube video of Sue Bryce talking about how she started her business. Then, I found more about her and the 28 Days on Creative Live in 2013. I started implementing her teaching in 2014.

Q: When first starting out, many photographers hit roadblocks on their journey to first starting their business – whether feeling their equipment isn’t good enough or feeling they need a studio to start a business. What roadblocks did you encounter and how did you get over them?

A: My roadblock was attracting the clients that would pay. I was so frustrated in the beginning because my phone wasn’t ringing off the hook, and I barely could schedule one paying client a month. I would see success stories in the group and that encouraged me. I started reading business books every week on customer service and attracting the perfect client. I priced myself right off the bat for the luxury client to find me. I continued to stay on the SBE site, and listen to everything Sue said to do, and did what I could with what I had. I had accountability partners who would help encourage me when I felt like giving up. And most of all, I stayed in prayer. I knew God didn’t bring me to it, not to finish what was started.

Q: How do you feel about your current work/life balance?

A: My current work-life balance is better. I time-block my month and plan ahead. I only photograph Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. No weekends. I have Tuesday for self-care day and Thursday for networking, client calls, and admin. The weekend’s are for family and any other little admin things I need to do.

Q: What (beyond money) has owning a business given you?

A: It has given me the power to give back to my community through speaking and guest appearances to help other businesses with my testimonial. It has given me confidence that I can do whatever I put my mind to. It has helped me set an example for my family that there is no limit in what they can dream of. It has given me security, knowing I have the skills to make money, and I will never be in need.

Q: What is your favorite advice that you’ve been given along your journey that has helped you the most?

A: The best advice I have been given is to not mix business money with personal money. Keep it all separate.
