Vintage French Top

Preparation

Your average client is not going to make the best choices about what clothes to bring if left to their own devices. In this talk preparing for her shoot with the dancer Rayna, who will be wearing a Vintage French Top from the studio wardrobe, Sue talks styling and how to build a studio wardrobe. Styling begins with educating your clients on what to bring in, and it can extend into what kind of pieces to consider getting for a studio wardrobe. The top questions Sue gets asked about studio wardrobe are:

  • How do I know what to buy?
  • How much should I spend?
  • What size should I get?

Sue answers those questions and also talks about the importance of in-person consultations and how they can dramatically increase your sales.

Shoot Part 1

Sue balances multiple creative demands as she shoots both stills and video for the dancer Rayna. At the same time, she works with her experimental impulse to shoot through a layer of tulle. Watch how she plays with these elements, moving from the seed of an idea into finding something that really works.

Items Used:

  • Vintage French Top
  • Tulle Lens Skirt

Key Take Away:

  • Keep pushing yourself through the moments when you feel uncomfortable or stuck. That’s often when you will find something beautiful.

Shoot Part 2

Sue goes further into experimentation, binging in a length of tulle for Rayna to wear and dance with. Sue teaches you how to work with a client in motion by watching them move and isolating the shapes you wish you to capture.

Key Take Away:

  • Sometimes choosing pieces that go together and going into a shoot blindly can lead you to something beautiful you might not have thought of originally.

Selection

Sue takes you through the images from Rayna’s Vintage French Top shoot, and she opens up about her thought process and struggles in finding the shots she was looking for.

Key Take Away:

  • Take your time to see and explore. Sometimes you’ve got to let the thing find you.
